For those patients living far away from Barcelona, the Centre prefers to practice IVF because pregnancy probabilities per cycle are higher. In this way, results are optimized and trips are reduced. How do we choose the stimulation treatment?
The main criteria are patient's age, ovaries morphology, hormone tests, weight, response to stimulation in previous cycles -if any- and our experience. It is very important to specify medication and the most suitable doses for each woman, isolating each case and avoiding standard treatment criteria. Each patient has unique characteristics. In vitro fertilization derived embryos are cultured until day three of development having from 6 to 8 cells. At this stage, an opening is made in the covering of the embryo and a cell is removed via aspiration with a pipette (biopsy procedure). The aspirated cell is processed for genetic analysis while the embryo is mantained into culture conditions. Genetically normal embryos are replace the next day.
